1862 Variety 11

Close-up of Date

Digits in the Denticles

Obverse Die Crack at 12:00

Reverse Die Crack at 9:30

Reverse Die Crack at 11:30

Obverse Comments:  Date position is C.  There appears to be two misplaced 1 digits in the denticles to the left of the date.  The digits are indistinct possibly due to die erosion that is beginning to form near the denticles.  The erosion is also observed at the design edges, where the working die recesses and metal flows in during earch strike.  The discovery piece exhibited the same die wear as the plate coin pictured here.  In addition, there is a die crack that extends from the first feather tip to 12:00.

Reverse Comments:  Reverse die crack at 9:30 that extends upward through the wreath and terminates within the last outside oak leaf.  Another die crack is observed at 11:30 that extends into the top left of the shield.

Plate Coin:  D. Poliquin collection, AU58

Known examples:  1.  AU58 web book plate coin, D. Poliquin
                             2.  VF35 discovery piece, A. Mendez
