1862 Variety 23

Obverse 25

Reverse Y

Obverse Diagnostics

Date Position

Reverse Diagnostics

Retained Cud Between 2:30 and 4:00

Obverse 25 is observed with date placement at LH.

Reverse Y is rotated 6 degrees counter clockwise and develops a cud between 2:30 and 4:00.

Comments:  The obverse of the above plate coin suffers from extensive weakness of strike on AMERICA and the date.  This weakness of strike is due to the presence of machine oils and/or grease filling the recesses of the working die that were created when these letters and numbers were hubbed from the working hub and digit punch impression.  Therefore, the weakness of strike of the above plate coin is a product of strike rather than a die characteristic of variety 25.

Variety 25 was first identified by this author during late December 2016.

Plate coin:  Keith Bock Collection, F12
