Reverse AY Die Crack Mapping

Primary Die Crack (Click Image To Enlarge)

Obverse 51 is observed with date placement at LE.

Reverse AY has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 12:00 extends downward through the top right of the shield and into the top of the right wreath.
2.  Die crack from the denticles at 3:00 extends downward through the right wreath.
3.  Moderately heavy die crack from the rim at 6:00 extends upward through the left ribbon end and olive leaves to the rim at 8:00.
4.  Die crack from the rim at 10:30 extends downward along the outer edge of the left wreath.

Comments:  Variety 49 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during mid May 2020 for inclusion in this book based on the die cracking of Reverse AY.  The primary die crack of Reverse AY, which extends between 6:00 and 8:00, is quite similar in location to the die crack of Reverse AK from the 1862 Variety 35 Die Pairing.
