1864 Bronze Variety 12

Obverse 18

Reverse U

Obverse Diagnostics

Date Position

Obverse 18 is observed with date placement at LH.  Obverse 18 has developed a heavy bisecting die crack that extends from the rim at 1:30 through the portrait and I of UNITED to the rim at 8:00.  Obverse 18 has acquired clash marks between feathers 7, 8 and 9.

Reverse U has acquired clash marks above the O of ONE, to the right of the denomination and through the C of CENT
.
Comments:   The Obverse 18 bisecting die crack represents an exciting and popular die state.  Whenever available during auction, examples of Variety 12 realize strong prices due to collector demand.

Tom Homans was very kind in granting me permission to use his images to illustrate Variety 12 for this book.
