1864 Bronze Variety 15
Obverse 21 is identified by repunching to the north on the 4 and a date
position at B, with the date very close to the denticles. Obverse
21 is observed with die clash marks visible between feathers 7, 8 and 9.
Reverse
AV develops a die crack from the denticles at 2:30 into the wreath.
Reverse AV is observed with die clash marks visible to the right
of the denomination.
Comments: During
late January 2015, Ed Nathanson kindly submitted the plate coin for
inclusion in this book. Variety 15 was initially brought to my
attention by Ed, who mentioned the repunching.
In addition to the repunching on the 4, obverse 21 may also exhibit the
digit punch anomaly that is seen throughout 1864. Since the plate coin
was damaged, I could see only the die chip in front of the 4 and not
the remaining features of the digit punch anomaly. In order to confirm
the presence of the digit punch anomaly, a problem free example must be
found.
