Obverse 40 is observed with date placement at C and clash marks.  Obverse 40 develops very heavy die flow lines and forms a rim break at 6:15 and another, larger one at 5:30.  Obverse 40 develops the following die cracks:
1.  Radial Die crack from the rim break at 5:30 upward and parallel with the 4 of the date.
2.  Die crack from the rim break at 5:30 connecting the 864 of the date and exiting into the rim break at 6:15.
3.  Die crack connecting the tops of NITED of UNITED.
4.  Die crack above the top of the first T of STATES.
5.  Die crack connecting ATES of STATES.

Reverse AAT has developed heavy die flow lines.  Reverse AAT develops the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 6:00 upward through the left wreath to the first oak leaf at 8:00.
2.  Die crack from the denticles at 8:45 upward through the left wreath to 10:00.

Comments:   Variety 29 is the second die pairing of Obverse 40, which was previously in service paired with Reverse AAR during the 1864 Bronze Variety 27 die pairing.  During the Variety 29 die pairing, Obverse 40 continues to degrade with the die flow lines, rim break at 5:30 and the associated radial die crack at 5:30 becoming more severe.

Variety 29 was identified by this author during early January 2018.
