1864 Copper Nickel Variety 9

Obverse 6.2

Reverse AAB

Obverse Diagnostics

Date Position

Die File Marks Around Ear

Reverse Diagnostics

Die Crack from 9:15 to 10:45

Obverse 6 is identified by date placement at B and heavy die file marks around the ear of Miss Liberty.

Reverse AAB has developed a heavy die crack form the rim at 9:15 through the outer edge of the wreath to the rim at 10:45.

Comments:  Obverse 6 was initially in service paired with Reverse F during the Variety 5 Die Pairing.

While attributing the above plate coin, my initial impression was that the coin was another example of Variety 5.  However, the severity of the die crack from 9:15 to 10:45 and the absence of the remaining diagnostic die cracks of Reverse F indicate a different reverse.

Variety 9 was first identifed by Craig McClain, who kindly submitted his coin for attribution and inclusion in this web book during mid August 2015.

Plate Coin:  Craig McClain Collection, G6
