Obverse 60 is observed with date placement at LH. Obverse 60 has
developed a rim break between 2:45 and 3:00, as well as the following
die crack: 1. Die crack from the denticles at 10:15 extends upward and connects the tops of 'STA(TES)'.
Reverse AAAS has developed a rim break between 2:30 and 3:30, as well as the following die cracks: 1. Die crack from the rim at 3:15 extends upward through the right wreath. 2. Die crack segment from the top olive leaf extends upward through the lower oak leaves of the left wreath. The
Reverse AAAS die cracking within the left wreath is difficult to map,
though I did manage to illustrate the most obvious die cracks on the
Reverse AAAS Die Crack Mapping. Reverse AAAS may also have
developed a die crack from the rim near the lowest arrowhead that
extends along the lower arrowhead shaft and continues through the
ribbon knot and olive leaves.
Comments: Variety 23 may
be characterized by the development of an obverse and reverse rim break
that are located at the same approximate location with respect to each.
Obverse 60 appears to exhibit the more advanced die state compared to
Reverse AAAS, which indicates Obverse 60 may have been in service prior
to Variety 23.
Variety
23 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above
plate coin during early January 2022 for inclusion in this book based
on the rim breaks of Obverse 60 and Reverse AAAS.
