1864 Copper Nickel Variety 4

Obverse 5

Reverse E

Obverse Diagnostics

Repunching on the 4 to the West

Date Punch Artifact

*Close-up of date is courtesy of the Flying Eagle and Indian Cent Attribution Guide by Rick Snow.*

Comments:  Date placement is B.  Obverse 5 is observed with repunching on the base of the 4 to the west.  Non-repunching visible below the crossbar of the 4 is an artifact from the date punch that was used to impress the date into the working die that struck this obverse.

Reverse E develops a heavy die crack from the rim at 3:00 that extends through the wreath and terminates at the rim at 5:30, according to Rick Snow.  There is a distinct possibility that reverse E will develop a cud in the area defined by the this die crack.

Plate Coin:  none available
