1865 Plain
5 Proof 1
Obverse 1 is observed with date placement at C.
Reverse A has yet to be observed with any die markers.
Comments:
The Proof 1 die pairing is one of three die pairs that struck
proof cents during 1865. Obverse 1 of this die pairing may have
been previously in service striking business cents and was subsequently
repolished and employed striking proof cents. The repolishing of
Obverse 1 would have eliminated most of the spur located on the lower
right side of the upper loop of the 8, which is evident on all 1865
Plain 5 digit punch impressions.
