Reverse M Die Crack Mapping

Reverse M Primary Die Crack Between 3:00 and 4:45

Die Crack (Click Image To Enlarge)

Obverse 13 is identified by date placement at RE and date repunching that features initial date impressions to the north above the base of the 1 and to the south below the upper loop of the 9.  Obverse 13 is observed with two denticles fused together at 5:00.

Reverse M has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Moderately heavy die crack from the rim at 3:00 extends downward along the outer edge of the lower oak leaves, through the lower arrowheads and through the tip of the right ribbon end, where it exits into the rim at 4:45.
2.  Light die crack from the denticles at 6:00 extends upward into the olive leaves.

Comments:  The Obverse 13 repunched 9 is very similar to the repunched 9 of Obverse 8 from the 1879 Variety 4 Die Pairing.

Variety 9 was first identified by John Grimmer, who submitted the above plate coin during early June 2021 for inclusion in this book based on the date repunching of Obverse 13.
