Obverse 3

Reverse D

Date Position

Doubling on LIBER on LIBERTY

Reverse Diagnostics

Off Center Clash Marks

Obverse 3 is identified by date placement at RH and class IV offset hub doubling on LIBER of LIBERTY.

Reverse D is identified by off center clash marks of ICA of AMERICA and denticles from the rim at 12:30 to the central part of reverse D.

Comments:  The clash marks of reverse D are the result of a casual hardness test to ascertain if the working die was soft enough to receive impressions from the reverse working hub.  It should be noted that the clash marks were imparted to a blank working die prior to any hubbing impressions from the working hub.

Rick Snow of Eagle Eye Rare Coins was very kind in allowing me to use his images to illustrate variety 1 for this book.  The above plate coin is the finest known example of variety 1 and it is a pleasure to exhibit the coin on this web page.
