1881 Variety 2

Obverse 6

Reverse F

Obverse Diagnostics

Date Position

Repunched Last 1

Obverse 6 is identified by date placement at LE with date repunching that features an initial date impression to the north above the serif of the second 1.  Obverse 6 has developed heavy die flow lines and has acquired a clash mark in front of the eye of Miss Liberty from a clashing event with Reverse F.

Reverse F is in a similar die state as Obverse 6, with the advancement of heavy die flow lines.  Reverse F has acquired a clash mark through the C of CENT from a clashing event with Obverse 6.

Comments:  The initial date impression of the last 1 was clockwise with respect to the final impression, which is noticeably rotated counterclockwise with regard to the first three digits of the date.  As a result, Variety 2 may be easily identified by the tilting of the final 1.

The clash marks of Variety 2 will fade due to the advancement of die flow lines.
