Date Position |

Repunched 81 |
Obverse 8 is identified by date placement at LH, with date repunching
that features initial date impressions to the northeast within the
upper loop of the second 8 and to the north above the flag and right
base as well as to the south below the flag of the last 1.
Obverse 8 is in an early die state with the presence of die
polish lines.
Reverse H is rotated 7 degrees counter clockwise and is in a similar die state as Obverse 8.
Comments: Obverse 8 was
impressed with a defective digit punch that gives the illusion of
additional initial date impressions on the bases of both 1 digits.
However, these are artifacts from the digit punch matrix and will
appear on other obverse working dies.
Variety 4 was identified
by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during late July
2017 for inclusion in this book based on the Obverse 8 date repunching.
