Obverse 3 is observed with date placement at RH. Obverse 3
has developed moderate die flow lines.
Reverse
C is identified by doubling to the northeast on the shield,
denomination, right wreath and top of the left wreath.
Reverse C
is in a similar die state as obverse 3 with the development of moderate
die flow lines.
Comments: The
doubling observed on reverse C is the result of class IV offset hub
doubling with a shift to the southwest. This shift occurred
during an intermidiary hubbing of the working die resulting in minor
doubling of the cenral die and strong doubling in the innermost oak
leaves of the right wreath.
The lack of doubling on the left
wreath in comparison to the remainder of the reverse is explained by
the fact that the working die and working hub were skew in the hubbing
press during the offset hub doubling event. When hub doubling
occurs in conjunction with a skewed die and/or hub, the doublied die
class VIII is used in conjunction with the hub doubling class.
Therefore, the doubling of reverse C is correctly defined as
class IV & VIII.
