Obverse 5 is identified by date placement at C with date repunching
that features an initial date impression to the northwest within the
lower loop of the 8, initial date impression to the south within the
lower loop of the 9 and initial date impressions to the south within
the upper and lower loops of the 3. Obverse 5 has developed
moderately heavy to heavy die flow lines and has acquired a clash mark
in front of the eye of Miss Liberty from a clashing event with Reverse
E. Obv. 5.2:
Obverse 5 has developed heavier die flow lines.
Reverse E is rotated 7 degrees clockwise and is in a similar die state
as Obverse 5, with the advancement of moderately heavy to heavy die
flow lines. Reverse E has acquired a clash mark through the C
of CENT from a clashing event with Obverse 5. Rev. E.2:
Reverse E has developed heavier die flow lines and the
following die cracks:
1. Die crack from the denticles at 3:30 downward through the
right wreath, middle and lower arrowheads and right wreath stem to the
denticles at 5:00.
2. Die crack from the denticles at 5:15 through the bottom of
the ribbon knot and into the olive leaves.

Comments:
Variety 3 was first identified by David Killough, who
submitted the above plate coin during late July 2017 for inclusion
in this book based on the date repunching of Obverse 5.
During mid November 2018, David Killough submitted an 1893 cent with
reverse die cracking. Upon examination of the David's
submission, I was able to identify his coin as being struck from the
Variety 3 die pairing and have assigned it the incremental Variety 3a
die state in order to capture the Reverse E die cracking.
During the 3a die state, the Obverse 5 and Reverse E clash
marks have become less distinguishable as well as the initial date
impressions witin the 8 and 9 from Obverse 5.
