Reverse AM.2 Die Crack Mapping

Obverse 38 is identified by date placement at left edge of denticle and date repunching that features initial date impressions to the south below the serif of the 1 digit; to the south within the upper loop and to the southwest at the upper right section of the lower loop of the 9 digit; to the north within the 0 digit; to the north within the lower loop as well as above the flag of the 5 digit.

Reverse AM is rotated 6 degrees clockwise.
Reverse AM.2:  Reverse AM has cracked.

Comments:  Variety 38 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during mid February 2017 for inclusion in this book based on the date repunching of Obverse 38.  David's submission included an additional two coins from the same die pairing, with all three exhibiting strike weakness on the first three feather tips.

During late September 2025, David Killough submitted an example of Variety 38 with Reverse AM cracked.  It should be noted that the debris that was situated within the recesses of the working dies that caused strike weaknesses of the Variety 38 Plate Coin was not evident when David's submission was struck, as evidenced by the fully struck first three feathers of Obverse 38.
