Obverse 40 is identified by date placement at C and date repunching that features initial date impressions to the south below the upper loop of the 9 and to the south below the flag of the 7.  Obverse 40 has clashed with Reverse AN.
Obv. 40.2:  Obverse 40 has developed heavy die flow lines.

Reverse AN is rotated 7 degrees clockwise and has clashed with Obverse 40.
Rev. AN.2:  Reverse AN is rotated 6 degrees clockwise and has developed heavy die flow lines.

Comments:  The initial date impressions of Obverse 40 become less distinct during the Variety 38a die state, though the initial date impression below the lower loop of the 9 retains its distinctive cresent shape.
