Obverse 59 is observed with an upward sloped date with placement at LH and repaired TE of STATES.  Obverse 59 was struck from slightly misaligned working dies.

Reverse AAK is rotated 7 degrees clockwise and develops the following die cracks:
1.  Light die crack from the rim at 4:45 through the ribbon end and wreath stem.
2.  Heavy die crack from the rim at 8:15 upward through the left wreath to the rim at 10:45.
Rev. AAK.2:  The die crack between 8:15 and 10:45 becomes more severe with the addition of another severe die crack from the rim at 9:30 that intersects die crack #2 above.

Comments:  Variety 61 was identified by this author during early December 2016 through the inventory of Jesse Nelson, who was extremely kind in allowing me to use his images to illustrate variety 61 for this book.  Variety 61, which was discovered shortly after the disovery and publication of the variety 61a die state, indicates the AAK die crack from 8:15 and 10:45 most likely originated from the rim at 8:15 and then extended upward through the wreath to the rim at 10:45.  Since I did not measure the rotation of the variety 61 plate coin below, I simply assumed the die rotation for variety 61 was identical to the 7 degrees measured on the variety 61a plate coin and that the entire 1863 variety 61 die pairing exhibited static working die rotation of 7 degrees.

Variety 61a may be characterized by an uncracked obverse and a heavily cracked reverse between 8:15 and 10:45.  The heavy die cracking of reverse AAK.2 may portend a later die state with die breakages within the area between 8:15 and 10:45.

The repaired TE of STATES was a product of the Mint correcting these letters directly on the working die, since obverse 59 was hubbed from a working hub with these letters broken.

The variety 61 die pairing was first identified by this author during late November 2016 with the discovery of the 1863 variety 61a die state..
