1878 Variety 2

Obverse 6

Reverse D

Obverse Diagnostics

Date Position

Misplaced 78 Digits Below the 87 of the Date

Misplaced Digit Punch Location

Obverse 6 is identified by misplaced 78 digits in the denticles below the primary 87 digits of the date, with date placement at RE.

Comments:  The misplaced digits of obverse 6 are most likely the result of an alignment error with the digit punch during date impression into the working die.  The initial digit punch impression was too far to the southwest with respect to the primary date placement.

Plate Coin:  Jim Powers, ANACS VG10
