Reverse G Die Crack Mapping

Obverse 6 is observed with date placement at RH and broken bases of the 8 digits.  Obverse 6 has acquired clash marks between feathers 6-9 from a clashing event with Reverse G.

Reverse G has acquired clash marks through the C of CENT and to the right of the denomination from a clashing event with Obverse 6.  Reverse G has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 3:15 downward through the right wreath connecting the middle and lower arrowheads.
2.  Die crack from the top left side of the shield into the denticles at 11:30.
3.  Additional light die crack upward along the outer edge of both left and right wreath.

Comments:  Variety 4 was initially identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during mid January 2018 for inclusion in this book.

The broken digits of Obverse 6 are the product of a broken digit punch.  This digit punch was utilized on several 1880 obverses, while degrading further and developing a break at the top left of the second 8 and a break at the base of the 0.  The latest degradation of this digit punch may be seen on Obverse 11 of the Variety 9 die pairing.

Plate coin:  David Killough Collection, VF35
