1882 Variety 6

Obverse 9

Reverse H

Obverse Diagnostics

Date Position

Partially Broken Tops Of The 8 Digits

Die Flow Lines

Obverse 9 is observed with date placement at LH and partially broken tops of the 8 digits.  Obverse 9 has developed heavy die flow lines.

Reverse H is in an earlier die state compared to Obverse 9.  Reverse H was struck from misaligned working dies.

Comments:  The partially broken tops of the 8 digits is the result of the digit punch suffering a breakage in this area of the digit punch matrix.  Since the breakage was partial, a sufficient amount of metal remained to impress the partial tops of the 8 digits into the Obverse 9 working die.

The presence of heavy die flow lines on Obverse 9 and the lack of any discernible die flow lines on Reverse H indicates that Obverse 9 may have been in service previous to the the Variety 6 die pairing.

Variety 6 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during late July 2017 for inclusion in this book based on the partially broken tops of the 8 digits of Obverse 9.

Plate Coin:  David Killough Collection, VF30
