Obverse 40 is identified by date repunching to the south on the 1 and to the west on the 899, with date placement at LH.  Obverse 40 is observed with die lines through the 1 of the date and through ES of STATES.   Obverse 40 has acquired a clash mark in front of the eye of Miss Liberty from a clashing event with Reverse AN.
Obv. 40.2:  Obverse 40 has now developed moderately heavy die flow lines and the typical eighth feather tip die break.

Reverse AN is rotated 5 degrees clockwise and has acquired a clash mark through the C of CENT from a clashing event with Obverse 40.
Rev. AN.2:  Reverse AN has now developed moderately heavy die flow lines.

Comments:  The die lines of Obverse 40 may be the product of die polishing or die lapping.  The presence of these die lines are evident on both Variety 36 and Variety 36a and may be used as a confirming attribute of Obverse 40.

Variety 36 was first identified by David killough, who submitted the above plate coin as well as two examples of Variety 36a for inclusion in this book based on the date repunching of Obverse 40.
