1906 Variety 18

Obverse 19

Reverse S

Obverse Diagnostics

Date Position

Repunched 19 to the South

Repunched 06 to the Northeast

Obverse 19 is identified by date placement at RE and date repunching that features initial date impressions to the south below the base of the 1, to the south below the base of the 9, to the northeast within the 0 and to the northeast within the lower loop of the 6.

Reverse S has yet to be observed with any die markers.

Comments:  The repunching of the 9 and 0 digits were previously unidentified in Snow's book.  The above plate coin is in an early enough die state to still exhibit the repunching elements of the 9and 0, whereas the Snow plate coin was most likely a later die state with the repunching features diminished.

As mentioned previously, Variety 18 is in a relatively early die state with Obverse 19 and Reverse S developing neither die cracking nor discernible die flow lines.

Plate coin:  Bob Travis Collection, AU55
