Variety 24
Obverse 25 is identified by misplaced 190 digits in the denticles below
the primary digits of the date, with date placement at RE.
Reverse Y is rotated 6 degrees clockwise. Reverse Y develops
the following die cracks:
1. Light die crack from the rim at 3:15 to the middle
arrowhead.
2. Light die crack from the rim at 5:00 through the wreath
stem and
into the ribbon knot.
3. Light die crack from the rim at 9:00 up through the wreath
to
the acorn at 10:00.
4. Light die crack from the rim at 10:15 into the wreath.
Rev. Y.2:
Reverse Y die cracks have become more severe.
Rev. Y.3:
Reverse Y now forms a cud between 3:15 and 4:45.
Comments: The
misplaced
digits of Obverse 25 are most likely the result of an alignment error
with the digit punch. The initial digit punch impression was
too
far southeast and at an angle of approximately 2.5 degrees clockwise
with respect to the primary date placement.
The Variety 24b die state, which was first identified by this author
during
mid June 2016, features the formation of a retained cud from the
initial die crack at 3:15.
