Reverse AAAJ.3 Die Crack Mapping

Obverse 53 is identified by date position at RE and concentric lathe lines that are located on the portrait.  Obverse 53 has acquired clash marks between feathers 7, 8 and 9 from a clashing event with Reverse AAAJ.  Obverse 53 has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Radial die crack from the rim at 12:15 extends downward through the second feather to the third feather spine.
2.  Die crack connects the tops of 'A(MERIC)A'.
3.  Radial die crack from the rim at 10:00 extends through the right half of 'S(T)ATES' and splits into two die cracks in the field below.  One crack extends upward into the headress to the third feather, while the second crack extends downward through the nose of Miss Liberty and ends in the field in front of the mouth of Miss Liberty.
Obv. 53.2:  The Obverse 53 die flow lines have become heavier as does the die cracks from 10:00, with the die crack extending downward forming a small break at the upper section.  In addition, Obverse 53 has developed the following die crack:
1.  Die crack from the denticles at 7:00 extending to the base of the 1.
Obv. 53.3:  The Obverse 53 die flow lines continue to become more severe as well as the two die cracks from 10:00, with a bi-level field area developing in the field from the die crack extending downward.

Reverse AAAJ has acquired clash marks located right of the denomination from a clashing event with Obverse 53.  Reverse AAAJ has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 1:00 extends downward to the top of the right wreath.
2.  Die crack segment in the right wreath between 1:30 and 2:00; two die crack segments between 2:00 and 2:30.
3.  Die crack from the rim at 3:30 extends upward through the right wreath to a point at 2:30.
4.  Die crack from the denticles at 11:15 extends downward into the upper left side of the shield.
Rev. AAAJ.2:  The Reverse AAAJ die flow lines have become heavier and the following die crack has developed:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 11:30 extends downward into the top left of the shield.
Rev. AAAJ.3:  The Reverse AAAJ die flow lines continue to become more severe.

Comments:  Obverse 53 and Reverse AAAJ clashed multiple times and at varying degrees of die rotation, though the Variety 37, 37a and 37b Plate Coins exhibited only a negligible degree of die rotation.

Variety 37 was first identified by Paul Nomes, who submitted the Variety 37, 37a and 37b Plate Coins during mid February 2021 for inclusion in this book based on the Obverse 53 lathe lines and Variety 37a and Variety 37b incremental die states.  Paul's discovery represents the second 1864 obverse that exhibits lathe lines, with the first being Obverse 20 from the 1864 Bronze Variety 14 Die Pairing.
