Die Rust Within Shield Elements

Die Rust Within Wreath

The second die pairing of obverse 23, which features clash marks under the chin and date placement at LE.

Reverse AAI is heavily rusted and is rotated approximately 15 degrees counter clockwise.  The rust has yielded distorted design features within the wreath and shield elements.

Comments:  Obverse 23 was initially in service paired with reverse AAA during the variety 25 die pairing.  Since reverse AAA was quite suitable for continued production, the questions arises as why the mint would employ a rusted reverse die to replace reverse AAA.

All images are couresy of Richard Snow of Eagle Eye Rare Coins.  Rick Snow was very kind in allowing me to use his images to illustrate variety 27 for this book.

Plate coin:  Eagle Eye Rare Coins, NGC MS65RB (PS)
