1864 With L

Mintage:  Estimated at 5,000,000

Comments:  A new obverse hub was designed by James Longacre during 1864.  This new obverse hub was sharper than the previous more rounded portrait and featured a pointed bust similar to those seen in 1859.  In addition, Longacre's initial L was added to the ribbon between the last feather and the hair curl.  The new working dies were put into service late in 1864, presumably alongside the No L working dies.  Many survivors are found in low circulated grades, where the initial is no longer visible due to the grade.  However, learning to differentiate the No L obverses from the With L obverses should be a requisite to a complete mastery of this date.  Needless to say, the premium for the 1864 With L cents is geater than the bronze No L counterparts.  Generally, 1864 With L cents come well struck with great eye appeal.  However, some are found in late die states with die erosion blurring design elements.  Since there is a premium on this date, it just makes sense to find the most visually attractive example for monies invested.

Die varieties for 1864 With L cents are predominantly repunched dates, with varieties 1, 2, and 3 being the best varieties based on the boldness and high degree of separation from the primary date. Varieties 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are all included in the top 100 die varieties for the series.  The With L repunched dates are markedly different to previous and later years, due to the number of drastically repunched dates and the ratio of repunched dates to the estimated working dies made.  Approximately half of all working dies manufactured have repunching of the date to some degree.  In view of this, one may wonder what circumstances were prevalent during the additon of the date to the working dies.
