Reverse AD.4 Die Crack Mapping

The second usage of Obverse 8.  Obverse 8 continues to degrade during this second usage due to the heavy die erosion of Obverse 8.  The repunching to the north on the date and LIB of LIBERTY may become indistinct in lower grades due to this advanced die state.  The clash marks of Obverse 8 that were acquired during its previous assignment during the 1864 with L Variety 6 Die Pairing are still evident.

Reverse AD is initially observed with no die markers.
Rev. AD.2:  Reverse rotaton of 4 degrees clockwise and Reverse AD has acquired clash marks to the left of the denomination from a clashing event with Obverse 8 during a large die rotation..  Reverse AD has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from 12:30 into the top right of the shield.
2.  Radial die crack from the rim at 7:00 extends upward through C(E)NT and continues upward to the bottom right of O(N)E.
3.  Die crack from the rim at 9:45 extends into the left wreath.
4.  Die crack from the rim at 10:45 extends into the left wreath.
Rev. AD.2a:  Reverse rotation of 83 degrees counter clockwise.
Rev. AD.3:  Reverse rotation of 24 degrees counter clockwise and the formation of a small die break at the bottom right of ON(E).
Rev. AD.3a:  Reverse AD is in a 9 degree counter clockwise rotated position.
Rev. AD.4:  Reverse AD is in a 1.5 degree counter clockwise rotated position and has developed the following additional die cracks:
5.  Die crack from the denticles at 2:00 extends upward into the right wreath.
6.  Die crack from the denticles at 3:45 extends upward into the right wreath.

Comments:  Obverse 8 was initially in service during the Variety 6 Die Pairing.

During early November 2016, I identified the earliest die state of reverse AD during the Variety 7 die pairing.  Examination of the reverse reveals no die rotation and no clash marks to the left of the denomination. Variety 7 will experience dynamic die rotation during subsequent Variety 7 die states.

Variety 7ab was discovered by this author during late February 2017 and features the greatest die rotation thus far.

During mid February 2019, Paul Nomes submitted an example of Variety 7 that featured a negligible die rotation.  Though Paul's example only exhibited a slight rotation, Variety 7 still exhibited dynamic die rotation when it struck Paul's coin.

Variety 7ba was identified by this author during mid September 2021.  During the 7ba Die State, Reverse AD is in a 9 degree counter clockwise rotated position.

Variety 7c was first identified by this author during mid November 2022.  I have thus far found two examples of Variety 7c,which includes the Variety 7c Plate Coin, with both featuring die rotations of 1.5 degrees counter clockwise.  Therefore, the Variety 7c Die State may represent the end of the dynamic die rotation evident during earlier die states and Variety 7 will maintain a 1.5 degree static rotation henceforth.
It should be noted that the development of the Reverse AD die cracks from 2:00 and 3:45 during the Variety 7c Die State may have occurred during either the Variety 7b or 7ba Die States, since the 7b and 7ba Plate Coins are lower grade circulated examples and determining die cracking is difficult due to wear.
