Reverse AM.5 Die Crack Terminating at 5:00

Obverse 21 is observed with date placement at C, with a slight upward slope of the date.  Obverse 21 develops a vertical die crack from 5:30 through the portrait and into the denticles at 1:00.

Reverse AM has degraded further with the die crack from 7:30 to 5:00 becoming more severe, with die breaks forming.  In addition, a heavy die crack has developed from 6:30 and intersects the aforementioned die crack just left of the ribbon knot.  Reverse AM is rotated 12 degrees clockwise.

Comments:  Reverse AM was initially paired with obverse 16 during the variety 16 die pairing.  Obverse 16, which also featured a vertical die crack, was removed from service and replaced with the obverse from this page to create variety 22.  Interestingly, this obverse develops a similar die crack.

Variety 22 may be rare based on the severe die cracking of reverse AM and the lack of die deterioration, other than the vertical die crack, on the obverse.  It may be that the obverse cracked early and variety 22 was dispatched shortly thereafter.

Plate Coin:  Russell Doughty, VF35 (Discovery Piece)
