Clash Marks Located Right Of Denomination


The second usage of Obverse 6, which is identified by date placement at C and date repunching that features initial date impressions to the south below the serif of the 1, to the south within the upper loop of the 8 and to the north above the final 6.  Obverse 6 has acquired clash marks in front of the eye of Miss Liberty and above the feathers.  Obverse 6 has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the denticles at 2:15 extends upward and connects the tops of 'OF'.
2.  Die crack from the denticles at 7:00 extends across to the base of the 1.
3.  Die crack from the denticles at 8:30 extends downward and connects the tops of 'U(NIT)ED'.
4.  Die crack from the denticles at 8:30 extends upward and connects 'UNIT(ED)'.
5.  Die crack from the denticles at 10:45 extends upward and connects 'STAT(ES)'.

Reverse H has acquired clash marks through (C)ENT and to the right of the denomination from a clashing event with Obverse 6.  Reverse H has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 12:00 extends downward into the top of the shield.
2.  Light die crack segment is located between 2:30 and 3:00 within the right wreath.
3.  Die crack from the rim at 3:15 extends downward into the top of the middle arrowhead.
4.  Light die crack from the rim at 4:15 extends into the tip of the lowest arrowhead.
5.  Die crack segment, which may be associated with die crack #3, extends from the right ribbon end to the middle arrow shaft.
6.  Heavy die crack from the rim at 7:00 extends upward into the arrow quill.
7.  Die crack segment extends between 7:00 and 8:15 within the olive leaves.
8.  Moderately heavy die crack from the rim at 9:30 extends downward through the left wreath to the olive leaves.

Comments:  Variety 8 represents the second usage of Obverse 6, which was previously in service paired with Reverse G during the 1866 Variety 7 Die Pairing.
