1866

Mintage:  9,826,500

Proofs:  725+

Comments:  1868 cent production was similar to that of 1867 and 1868.  Locating original and attractive examples will be difficult .  My advice is to be patient and choose only the most eye appealing and problem free example requisite for the collection.  Collectors should carefully evaluate coins of this date in slabs, as these are frequently overgraded.  In addition to being competent in grading, collectors should also be experienced in determining what a genuine coin looks like.  I have seen quite a few counterfeit 1866 cents offered for sale which sold at premiums expected from genuine coins.

The best variety for 1866 is variety 1, which is #20 in the top 100 varieties for the series.  Varieties 2, 3, 4, 5, 12 and 13 are also included in the top 100.  Variety 15 features 178 degree reverse rotation.
