Obverse 3 is identified by date placement at C and date repunching that
features initial date impressions to the north above the 8, within the
upper loop and above the 6 and above the 7. Obverse 3 has
acquired clash marks in front of the face and between feathers 7, 8 and
9 from a clashing event with Reverse B.
Reverse B has acquired clash marks through (C)ENT and to the right of
the denomination from a clashing event with Obverse 3.
Reverse B has developed the following die cracks:
1. Die crack from within the horizontal shield bars extends
to the right wreath and intersects die crack #2.
2. Moderately heavy die crack from the outside edge of the
right wreath at 1:15 extends downward through the wreath and through
the middle
and lower arrowheads.
3. Die crack from the rim at 1:45 intersects die crack #2.
4. Die crack from the rim at 3:30 intersects die crack #2.
5. Die crack extends from the olive leaf above the arrow
quill, through the ribbon knot and along the shaft of the middle arrow.
6. Die crack from the rim at 7:00 through the arrow nock and
into the olive leaf above.
7. Die crack extends upward from the olive leaf above the
arrow quill through the olive and oak leaves to a point at 9:15 within
the left wreath.
8. Die crack from the denticles at 9:45 extends into the left
wreath.
9. Die crack from the rim at 10:15 extends into the left
wreath, then progresses downward and intersects die crack #8 at the
outer oak leaf at 9:30. Rev. B.2:
Reverse B has now developed a cud between 9:45 and 10:15.
Comments: Due
to the development of the Reverse B.2 die break, which leads to the
retirement of Reverse B, Obverse 3 will later be in service paired with
Reverse C during the 1867
Variety 3 Die Pairing.
