Reverse D Die Crack Mapping

Obverse 4 is identified by date placement at C and date repunching that features initial date impressions to the south below the serif of the 1, to the south within the upper loop of the 8 and to the north above the 7. Obverse 4 has acquired clash marks in front of the eye of Miss Liberty from a clashing event with Reverse D.

Reverse D is identified by die lines within the vertical shield bars of the shield, through the ribbon knot and between the left wreath and (C)ENT.  Reverse D has acquired clash marks through (C)ENT and to the right of the denomination from a clashing event with Obverse 4.  Reverse D has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Light die crack from the right wreath extends downward through the field, CEN(T) and into the ribbon.
2.  Radial die crack from the rim at 2:30 extends into the right wreath.
3.  Radial die crack from the rim at 9:30 extends through the left wreath and field, where it approaches (O)NE.

Comments:  Reverse D will later be in service paired with Obverse 16 during the 1867 Variety 16 Die Pairing.

Reverse D may exhibit additional radial die cracks, such as those of the second usage of Reverse D during the 1867 Variety 16 Die Pairing; however, debris strike-throughs plagued many examples of Variety 4 (including the above plate coin) and definitively identifying any possible additional die cracks is difficult due to the strike-throughs.

Obverse 4 and Reverse D clashed at least twice while in service during Variety 4.
