Clash Mark Through The C Of CENT
Obverse 42 is identified by date placement at RE and date repunching
that features initial date impressions to the north above the flag and
top of the 1 as well as initial date impressions to the south within
both loops and to the southeast within the lower looop of the final 8.
Obverse 42 has acquired a clash mark in front of the eye of
Miss Liberty from a clashing event with Reverse AQ. Obverse
42 has developed heavy die flow lines and a small die break atop the
eighth feather.
Reverse AQ is rotated 6 degrees clockwise and is in a similar die state
as Obverse 42, with the advancement of heavy die flow lines.
Reverse AQ has acquired a clash mark through the C of CENT
from a clashing event with Obverse 42.
Comments:
The Obverse 42 initial date impression within the lower loop
of the final 8 is most likely the result of a second digit punch
impression far to the southeast with respect to the final date
placement. A similar example occurred on Obverse 47 from the 1898 Variety 42 die pairing,
where Obverse 47 received two digit punch impressions that resulted in
an initial date impression located in almost exactly the same location
within the lower loop of the final 8 as Obverse 42.
