Reverse AX Die Crack Mapping

Clash Mark Through (C)ENT

Obverse 57 is identified by date placement at LE and date repunching that features initial date impressions to the south below the serif of the 1 and to the north above the final 8.  Obverse 57 is observed with the presence of die polish lines.

The second die pairing of Reverse AX.  Reverse AX is now rotated 5 degrees clockwise and is observed with light die flow lines and the presence of die polish lines.  Reverse AX has acquired a clash mark through (C)ENT from the previous assignment of Reverse AX.  Reverse AX has developed the following die cracks:
1.  Die crack from the rim at 2:00 downward through the outside edge of the right wreath to the the rim at 4:45.
2.  Die crack from the denticles at 7:45 into the middle olive leaf.
3.  Die crack from the rim at 10:45 downward through the outside edge of the left wreath to a point at 9:00.

Comments:  Obverse 57 and Reverse AX appear to be in contrasting die states, where Obverse 57 has not developed any die flow lines and Reverse AX has developed light die flow lines.  However, both Obverse 57 and Reverse AX exhibit die polish lines.

Reverse AX was previously in service paired with Obverse 49 during the 1898 Variety 44 Die Pairing.

Variety 52 was first identified by David Killough, who submitted the above plate coin during mid May 2018 for inclusion in this book based on the Obverse 57 date repunching.
