1901

Mintage:  79,609,158

Proof:  1985

Comments:  1901 cents are readily available throughout the grading spectrum.  Regardless of the high availability, collector should always choose the best struck and most eye appealing examples possible.  Many 1901 cents offered for sale have damaged rims due to being encased in aluminum advertisement cards.  Collectors should avoid coins with the rim crushed, distorted or broken.  These characteristics are not mint made and are a product of the encasement process.  I have seen many examples of variety 12 with these encasement marks.

The overwhelming majority of die varieties for this year are minor repunched dates.  Variety 10 is the best variety due to the boldness of the repunching.
