1860

POINTED BUST (TYPE I)

ROUNDED BUST (TYPE II)

Mintage:  20,566,000

Comments:  The estimated mintage of the type I obverse is 1,000,000.  Type I 1860 cents were made from undated working dies made in 1859.  These dies were dated 1860 and put into service and are among the first 1860 indian cents minted.  These are usually found well struck.   Working hub deterioration may be seen on some examples asa broken R of AMERICA on the obverses of some type I cents.   The distinguishing difference between the type I obverse and type II is the shape of the bust point and where the bust point is positioned in relation to the U of UNITED and date; on the type I obverse,  it is pointed and will point at the U of UNITED.

The type II obverse is the most encountered between the two obverse hub types.  The bust point is more rounded and points between the date and the U of UNITED.  There is no definitive explanation as to why the mint changed from the type I hub to the type II hub, but this is what makes numismatics interesting.
